UK Grade Calculator
Calculate your UK degree classification — First, 2:1, 2:2, or Third — from your module marks and credits. Works for both honours and taught Master's programmes.
UK Grade Calculator
Enter your module scores and their credit weightings to get your UK degree classification.
Calculate your UK degree classification instantly. Based on the honours system used by UK universities, your percentage mark converts to a degree class: First (70%+), Upper Second/2:1 (60-69%), Lower Second/2:2 (50-59%), or Third (40-49%). Enter your module marks and credits — see your classification immediately.
The UK Grading System
Quick Reference: UK Degree Classifications
• 70%+ = First Class Honours
• 60-69% = Upper Second (2:1)
• 50-59% = Lower Second (2:2)
• 40-49% = Third Class Honours
UK universities do not use GPA. Instead they award degrees using a classification system based on the weighted percentage average of your modules. Most universities also weight final years (year 2 and year 3) more heavily than year 1.
For postgraduate degrees the categories are Distinction (70%+), Merit (60-69%), and Pass (50-59%). The same percentage thresholds apply.
Your degree classification is calculated by weighting your modules by their credit value, exactly the way a GPA is weighted by credit hours. Most UK universities also weight later years (year 2 and year 3) more heavily than year 1.
UK Grade Formula
A weighted average of module marks:
Final Mark = Σ (Module Mark × Credits) ÷ Σ (Credits)
- Module marks are percentages out of 100.
- Credits vary by university — typically 10, 15, or 20 per module.
- Apply any year weighting your university uses (e.g., 25% year 2 + 75% year 3).
How to Use the UK Grade Calculator
Pull your module results before starting:
-
1Add a module per row
Include every module that contributes to the final classification.
-
2Type the module credit weight
Look at the module specification — it is usually 10, 15, or 20 credits.
-
3Enter the module mark
Use the final module mark, not individual coursework marks.
-
4Read the classification
The calculator shows the percentage and the matching degree class.
Worked Example: A Final-Year Student
Six modules in the final year of a UK undergraduate degree:
| Module | Credits | Mark | Weighted |
|---|---|---|---|
| Advanced Algorithms | 20 | 72% | 1440 |
| Dissertation | 40 | 68% | 2720 |
| Machine Learning | 20 | 65% | 1300 |
| Software Engineering | 20 | 70% | 1400 |
| Databases | 20 | 63% | 1260 |
Weighted total: 8120 ÷ 120 credits = 67.7% → Upper Second (2:1)
Why the UK Classification Matters
A 2:1 is the unofficial minimum bar for most UK graduate jobs and Master's programs. A First opens doors to PhD funding, top consultancies, and competitive professional schemes.
Because the UK system rewards consistency at the top end, every late-degree module counts. A few low marks in your final year can push a borderline 2:1 into a 2:2 — knowing the math before exams matters.
