Semester GPA Calculator
A semester GPA captures how well you did in one specific term — fall, spring, or summer. This Semester GPA Calculator gives you the term average in seconds so you know exactly where you stand before the cumulative GPA catches up.
What is a Semester GPA?
A semester GPA (also called a term GPA) is the average grade point value of every course you completed in a single semester, weighted by credit hours. It only covers that term — last semester and the term before are not included.
It is the figure that appears next to "Term GPA" on your official transcript. Schools also use it to decide on dean's list eligibility, academic probation, and warning notices.
Knowing your semester GPA early lets you react. If it is below your target you can adjust study habits, switch a class, or rethink a workload before the next term begins.
Semester GPA Formula
The formula is the same one used for any GPA, applied only to the courses you took this term:
Semester GPA = Σ (Grade Points × Credit Hours) ÷ Σ (Credit Hours)
- Use only the courses from the single semester you want to evaluate.
- Include withdrawn or audited courses only if your school counts them.
- Treat repeated courses based on your institution's replacement policy.
How to Calculate Your Semester GPA
It takes about a minute. Pull up your grades and follow along:

Semester GPA Example — 15 Credit Hours
A typical 15-credit semester might look like this:
| Course | Credits | Grade | Points |
|---|---|---|---|
| Organic Chemistry | 4 | B+ | 13.2 |
| World History | 3 | A- | 11.1 |
| Statistics | 4 | A | 16.0 |
| Spanish II | 3 | B | 9.0 |
| Yoga | 1 | A | 4.0 |
Total grade points: 53.3
Total credits: 15
Semester GPA = 53.3 ÷ 15 = 3.55
Why Track Each Semester Separately
Your semester GPA is the most current snapshot of your performance. The cumulative GPA is slower to move — a rough semester might only nudge a CGPA by 0.1, but the same term GPA could be a full point lower than your average.
Tracking each term gives you a feedback loop. If three semesters in a row are trending down, that is a pattern worth investigating, even if the overall CGPA still looks acceptable.
