How GPA Works in Pakistan

Most Pakistani universities follow the Higher Education Commission (HEC) framework: a 4.0 GPA scale derived from percentage brackets that map to letter grades. Typical brackets are A (85%+) → 4.0, B+ (80-84%) → 3.5, B (75-79%) → 3.0, C+ (70-74%) → 2.5, C (65-69%) → 2.0, D (50-59%) → 1.0, F (<50%) → 0.0.

Most Pakistani universities follow the HEC 4.0 scale, but each institution's percentage-to-GPA mapping varies slightly. NUST, LUMS, FAST, and other major universities publish their own conversion tables in academic handbooks — always verify yours before submitting applications.

Both absolute grading (fixed percentage bands) and relative grading (curved against class performance) are used. The GPA formula itself is identical to the US version once the grade points are decided.

Pakistan GPA Formula

Pakistani universities follow the HEC weighted-average model. The variant most commonly printed in academic handbooks looks like this:

CGPA = [ (GP₁ × CH₁) + (GP₂ × CH₂) + … + (GPₙ × CHₙ) ] ÷ (CH₁ + CH₂ + … + CHₙ)

  • Grade points come from your university's percentage-to-GPA table.
  • Credit hours are listed in the course catalogue.
  • Same formula applies to single-semester and cumulative calculations.

How to Use the Pakistan GPA Calculator

Have your result card or grade report ready:

  1. 1
    List each Pakistani-university course

One row per course taken during the semester.

  2. 2
    Type the HEC-style credit hours

Typically 3 for lecture-only courses, 4 for courses with labs.

  3. 3
    Enter grade or grade point

If your university gives letter grades, the calculator converts; if it gives percentages, use the matching grade point.

  4. 4
    Read your Pakistani 4.0 GPA

The result is on the standard 4.0 scale used by Pakistani universities.

Worked Example: A BS Engineering Semester

Five courses, mixed performance:

Course Credits Grade Quality
Engineering Mathematics 3 A (4.0) 12.0
Programming Fundamentals + Lab 4 B+ (3.5) 14.0
Physics + Lab 4 B (3.0) 12.0
Functional English 3 A (4.0) 12.0
Islamic Studies 2 A (4.0) 8.0

Quality points: 58.0 ÷ 16 credits = 3.63 GPA

Why GPA Matters for Pakistani Students

Most Pakistani universities require a minimum CGPA of 2.0 to remain in good standing; many programs put students on probation below 2.5. Honors graduation usually starts at 3.5.

Scholarships, including the HEC indigenous PhD scholarship and most international Fulbright tracks, require a strong CGPA (often 3.0+ at undergraduate level) along with other criteria. Pakistani graduates applying abroad usually convert their 4.0 GPA directly into the US equivalent.

Frequently Asked Questions

Pakistani universities follow the HEC (Higher Education Commission) framework: percentage marks map to letter grades, letter grades map to grade points on a 4.0 scale, and the GPA is a weighted average using credit hours. A typical mapping is 85%+ → 4.0 (A), 80-84% → 3.5 (B+), 75-79% → 3.0 (B), 70-74% → 2.5 (C+), 65-69% → 2.0 (C), 50-59% → 1.0 (D), below 50% → 0.0 (F). Individual universities adjust the brackets slightly.
All three use the HEC 4.0 scale, but the percentage-to-grade mapping differs in the details. NUST uses absolute grading with fixed percentage brackets. LUMS uses relative grading (curving) for most courses, so the same percentage might map to different grades depending on class performance. FAST mixes both approaches across departments. Always check the latest academic handbook for your specific university.
Most Pakistani universities require a minimum CGPA of 2.0 to remain in good academic standing. Drop below 2.0 and you typically go on academic probation. Drop below 1.5 and you risk being asked to leave the programme. Honours graduation usually begins at 3.5, and a CGPA of 3.0+ is the common cut-off for HEC and Fulbright scholarship eligibility.
If your university already uses the HEC 4.0 scale, US graduate schools typically accept your CGPA at face value — both scales work the same way mathematically. For programmes that require an official evaluation, services like WES will re-evaluate course-by-course and may apply minor adjustments based on the specific grading rigour of your institution. Submit your transcript directly and let the evaluator handle the conversion.
Yes. Enter the courses from one semester to get the semester GPA, or roll up all semesters to get your cumulative GPA. The math is the same weighted-average formula. For a quick cumulative figure you can also use the CGPA Calculator instead — that one accepts semester GPAs directly without re-entering every course.
