Marks to Percentage Calculator

Convert raw marks into a percentage instantly. Works for one subject or a whole report card — add a row per subject for the overall result.

Marks Percentage Calculator

A Marks Percentage Calculator converts raw test scores into a percentage. Enter the marks you scored and the total possible marks — the tool returns the exact percentage instantly.

What is a Percentage of Marks?

A percentage of marks expresses your score as a fraction of 100. If you scored 84 out of 120 on an exam, your percentage is the share of those 120 points you actually earned: (84 ÷ 120) × 100 = 70%.

Percentages are the universal language of grading. They make it easy to compare results across tests with different totals — 84/120 and 56/80 are both 70%.

Schools and universities outside the US often report final grades as a percentage rather than a letter grade or GPA. Knowing how to convert quickly between marks and percentages is a basic academic skill.

Percentage Formula

A single formula handles every case:

Percentage = (Marks Obtained ÷ Total Marks) × 100

  • Marks Obtained is your raw score on the exam or assignment.
  • Total Marks is the maximum possible score.
  • The result is always between 0 and 100.

How to Use the Marks Percentage Calculator

Two numbers and you are done:

  1. 1
    Enter your obtained marks

The score you actually earned on the assignment.

  2. 2
    Enter the total marks

The maximum possible — usually printed on the exam paper.

  3. 3
    Add more subjects if needed

For a multi-subject average, add a row per subject; the tool computes the overall percentage.

  4. 4
    See your final percentage

The result is shown with two decimal places.

Percentage Example — Five Subjects

A student's five subjects from one term:

Subject Obtained Total Percentage
Math 85 100 85.00%
Physics 72 100 72.00%
Chemistry 68 100 68.00%
English 78 100 78.00%
History 90 100 90.00%

Total obtained: 393 ÷ 500 = 78.6% overall

Why Percentage Calculations Matter

Percentages let you compare scores across tests of different sizes. They are also the basis for converting marks into letter grades or GPA in most grading systems.

Many scholarship and admission cut-offs are stated as percentages — "75% in your senior year" is a common requirement. Tracking your percentage every term tells you whether you are on the right side of those thresholds.

Frequently Asked Questions

Marks are the raw score you earned on an exam (for example, 84 out of 120). A percentage rescales that to a value out of 100 — in this case, 70%. Percentages make it easy to compare scores across tests with different totals, which is why most universities convert internally to percentages before applying letter grades or GPA.
Add one row per subject. The calculator computes each subject's percentage individually and also returns the overall percentage across all subjects (total obtained ÷ total maximum × 100). This is how schools typically compute the term average that appears on a report card.
Because of weighting. If subjects have different total marks, simply averaging the individual percentages would treat them equally — which is incorrect. The calculator uses total obtained over total maximum, which weights each subject by its actual size. For example, a 100-mark math test counts more than a 50-mark art test even if both ended up at the same percentage.
Indirectly. Once you have the percentage, you can map it to a letter grade using your school's grading scale (commonly 90-100 = A, 80-89 = B, and so on). For an automatic conversion, use the Grade Calculator or the country-specific tools — they apply the right grading boundaries for your education system.
Yes — anywhere a score-out-of-total appears. Standardized test prep, mock exams, certification scores, even fitness assessments use the same formula. The tool is generic enough that you can drop in any pair of numbers and get the correct percentage instantly.
