What is a Percentage of Marks?

A percentage of marks expresses your score as a fraction of 100. If you scored 84 out of 120 on an exam, your percentage is the share of those 120 points you actually earned: (84 ÷ 120) × 100 = 70%.

Percentages are the universal language of grading. They make it easy to compare results across tests with different totals — 84/120 and 56/80 are both 70%.

Marks are the raw score you earned on an exam (for example, 84 out of 120). A percentage rescales that to a value out of 100 — in this case, 70%. Percentages make it easy to compare scores across tests with different totals, which is why most universities convert internally to percentages before applying letter grades or GPA.
